How to Get Rid of Urine Smell Out of Mattress

If you want to clean and reclaim your mattress, doing it in the right steps increases your chances of getting the smells and stains out. Here is what you should do.

Assess the damage

Assess the mess on your bed. Is it little or a lot of urine,  fresh or dry urine? Does the mattress have a mild or intense scent? Understanding the mattress mess will help you plan the best cleaning method.

Again, another issue is the kind of mattress you have. Foam mattresses are tricky; they absorb the urine faster, so you should soak up the moisture quickly.

Blot the wet area

Use rags or paper towels and press the wet area on the mattress to blot out excess urine. Be keen to avoid rubbing the bed as the urine gets deeper into the mattress. Keep the windows open in the room for ventilation.

Clean the mattress

There are various ways of cleaning the mattress, like vinegar and baking soda, to eliminate dog pee on memory foam mattresses.

Vinegar spraying

Pour some vinegar solution in a spray bottle, one part of vinegar, two parts of water, and two-three spoons of laundry detergent. Sway the solution to mix well and spray on the mattress. Let the solution sit on the bed for 10 minutes.

Later, blot the vinegar solution out of the mattress with a dry towel. If the urine smell remains, repeat the procedure of spraying vinegar. Once you remove all the moisture, use baking soda. Sprinkle a liberal amount of the powder on the stain and leave the bed for some hours, if possible, a whole day.

The powder should form clumps as it absorbs more vinegar from the bed. Once the baking powder becomes dry, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the powder thoroughly.

Dishwashing liquid and peroxide

This technique is perfect for dried pee which can be harder to remove than a fresh mess. But first, you should remove the bedding as hydrogen peroxide can stain them. So, why use hydrogen peroxide? The element is excellent in eliminating pungent scents like urine and germs.

Prepare the peroxide mixture by mixing dishwashing liquid, three tablespoons of baking soda, and 300 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide. Swirl the bottle to mix the ingredients, and don’t shake the container. Spray the messed area with the mixture and leave it for an hour. Later use a damp cloth to clean the site without rubbing or scrubbing too hard. After cleaning, blot the area dry.

Use commercial product

Consider using an enzymatic cleaner such as Oxiclean as its scented to eliminate the smell. The cleaner has an element that attacks the odor. Choose cleaners with enzyme protease. Like in the other methods, apply the cleaner on the messed areas on the bed, allow it to work, and dry it thoroughly.

How to get Yellow Stains Out of a Memory Foam Mattress

Yellow stains on the mattress may result in sweat, urine, and body oil. The methods used to remove stains are the same for eliminating the smell in a foam mattress.

  • Use of vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide solution ( with baking soda, liquid dish soap) to dissolve the stain and kill bacteria

Apply both methods like in the usual cleaning procedure as explained above. Remember, if the stain is old, it requires more cleaning effort or may require a professional cleaner.

Does Urine Ruin Memory Foam?

Yes, urine can destroy your mattress if you don’t dry it out. Frequent urination on the mattress may lead to too much moisture, which creates a breeding ground for bacteria and molds. It also becomes uncomfortable to sleep on a sticky bed.

What Happens if You Wet a Memory Foam Mattress?

Urine on a mattress may dry, but it forms a salt if you don’t attend to the mess. When you sweat at night or stay in a humid room, the salt draws moisture. Continuous absorption of moisture creates a breeding zone for bacteria and causes mold. This situation, with time, makes your mattress unclean, and it loses its integrity.

How to Make a Memory Foam Mattress Stop Smelling like Pee

There are two methods you can apply to remove the urine smell out of the mattress.

Baking soda method

Dust baking soda on the area where the mattress stinks and let it sit for a day. You may consider opening the windows to allow natural sunlight to get in. Sunlight helps the baking soda work effectively.

The baking soda’s pH neutralizes the acidic urine odor and draws out any moisture. After a day, you can vacuum the powder, and the pee scent will be no more.

Corn starch method

This method removes both the stain and the urine smell. First, you need to sprinkle the powder on the affected areas and add a few drops of water. Allow the powder to stay for 10 minutes, remove it and blot the spot.

The starch will break down the odor and soak up the moisture, urine, and stains. This powder acts as a deodorizer for a memory foam mattress.

Use vinegar

It’s another great solution to eliminate urine odor. Prepare an equal solution of cold water and white distilled vinegar. You can add a few drops of essential oils like lavender to cover up the awful smell.

Apply the solution on the mattress using a spray bottle and let it air dry. Later sprinkle some baking soda to absorb moisture and neutralize the pungent vinegar smell.

How to Protect a Memory Foam Mattress from Urine and Water

  • Keep your bed in a leakproof protector cover and waterproof. The cover protects the mattress from any smell and stains in the future.
  • Vacuum the mattress regularly to avoid any residue and odor.
  • If the bedwetting is a consistent issue, consider using a bedwetting alarm.
  • If you don’t have a mattress cover, use several cut trashes bags or a painter’s drop cloth.

Other caring tips for your mattress include:

  • Rotate your mattress twice a year
  • Bathe your bed under sunlight when possible
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals on your mattress to avoid destroying it
