Wyze lock makes your existing deadlock door advanced by replacing the interior thumb latch without altering the exterior lock. It enhances your home’s security by connecting to your phone and giving you notifications when someone accesses your door. One of the best perks of the Wyze Locks is its affordability compared to other smart locks in the market. Despite its great features, it does not lack some flaws. In this article, we will help you set it up and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.

How to install the Wyze lock

Since Wyze Lock connects to one side of the lock, the deadbolt hardware needs to be compatible with the Wyze Lock. Wyze Lock is compatible with most single-cylinder deadbolts (the thumb-turn style lever instead of a keyhole on the inside of the door).

It is essential to know that Wyze lock does not work with these deadbolt brands.

All you need to install a Wyze lock is a Phillips screwdriver; everything else you need comes in the package. The package comes with:

  • Wyze Lock
  • Wyze Gateway
  • Four AA batteries
  • Adhesive strip
  • Mounting Plate
  • Four lock adapters

Directions

  • Tape the outside of the existing lock using the provided adhesive tape to hold it in place.
  • Unlock your existing deadbolt.
  • Remove the interior side of your deadbolt (thumb latch) using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Remove any backplates if there are any.
  • Insert the screws from your existing deadbolt into the holes of your Wyze lock mounting plate.
  • Align the Wyze lock mounting plate with the place of the old thumb latch and tighten the screws to secure it in place.
  • Install the provided adapter that fits the tailpiece of your lock.
  • Pull the notch on the bottom of the lock to remove the front plate of your Wyze Lock.
  • Set the Wyze Lock on the mounting plate and adjust the knob to align with the adapter. Ensure the lock is level with the door.
  • Test that the lock can be locked and unlocked with the thumb latch. If the lock is not turning, disconnect it from the door, rotate the thumb latch at 90 degrees, and try again.
  • Tighten the preinstalled screws on the battery compartment. Make sure they are snug but not too tight.
  • Insert the 4 AA batteries into the battery compartment, and then fold the battery latches down.
  • Place the cover on the lock, which attaches with magnets instead of fasteners.

How to set up your Wyze Lock to the Lock Gateway

The Lock Gateway is a Zigbee communication hub that connects your Wi-Fi network to the Wyze Lock. Setting up your Wyze lock involves connecting the Gateway to Wi-Fi and pairing the Gateway to your phone via Bluetooth. Here’s how to set it up and pair it with your Wyze Lock.

  • Download the Wyze app.
  • Create your Wyze account using an email address and enter a password.
  • Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  • Plug your Lock Gateway into a power outlet within 50 feet from your door.
  • Open the Wyze app, click home and then select the “+” icon on the top left corner.
  • Click “Add Device”
  • Select Wyze Lock Gateway.
  • The LED lights on the Gateway will start flashing red and blue. If it doesn’t, long-press the reset button on the Gateway until the LED starts flashing red and blue.
  • Remove the battery cover from the Wyze Lock, press and hold the pairing button at the top, and release when you hear the clock beep.
  • When the LED light on the lock flashes, click “Next” on the Wyze app.
  • A prompt will appear, enter your home Wi-Fi name and password.
  • The LED light on the Gateway will turn solid green to indicate a successful connection.
  • Label your Gateway and save it.

How to calibrate your Wyze Lock

Calibrating your Wyze lock ensures the lock recognizes when your door is open or closed. It uses a sensor in the lock to determine the door’s position relative to its close state.

  • Stand near the lock during the calibration process.
  • Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone.
  • Open the Wyze app and select “Wyze Lock.”
  • Click on the gear icon to open the lock settings.
  • Scroll down the list and tap “Calibrate.”
  • Close your door and manually lock the deadbolt.
  • Tap “Next” and listen for a chime from your lock.
  • Unlock the deadbolt manually and open your door as wide and possible.
  • Tap “Next” and listen for a chime from your lock.
  • Slightly close the door but with some gap between the door and the door frame.
  • Tap “Next” and listen for a chime from your lock.
  • Close the door completely and lock the deadbolt manually.
  • Tap “Next” to finish the lock’s calibration. Wyze Lock will then unlock and lock itself twice in succession to make sure the deadbolt functions correctly.

How do you share a Wyze Lock?

Wyze Lock allows you to share access to different phones using the same Wyze Lock account. You can only set the sharing feature per lock; therefore, you have to manually add users to every lock if you want to share multiple locks. Here’s how to share your Wyze Lock:

  • Open the Wyze app.
  • Select the lock you want to share.
  • Click on the settings icon in the top right.
  • Click on ”Share”
  • If you want to add a new person, enter their email address. You can also select someone from the list of recent shares. If they already have a Wyze account, use the associated email address. If they do not have an account, Wyze will send them an invite.
  • Tap “Share” in the top right.
  • If your Wyze lock has a keypad, all users must create an access code when they accept the share.

How to stop sharing the Wyze Lock

You are also allowed to stop the shared access at any time. These are the steps to follow:

  • Open the app.
  • Select the device you want to stop sharing.
  • Click on “Account Tab” and the “Sharing”
  • A list of shared users will appear.
  • Select the user you want to remove and tap “Cancel.”

What voice commands does Wyze Lock support?

Wyze lock supports voice commands from both Alexa and Google Assistant, which allows you to lock and unlock your door without using your phone or the manual lock.

How do I put Wyze Lock on my Google Home?

The Google Home app communicates with your Wyze Plug through Google Assistant. Here’s how to connect your Wyze Lock to Google Assistant:

  • Open the Wyze app, add your Wyze Plug and name it.
  • Update your Plug with the latest firmware version. Click on account>Firmware Update.
  • Download the Google Home app.
  • Create an account using your Google email address and a password.
  • Tap “Add”
  • Click “Set up device.”
  • Tap ‘ Work with Google”
  • Locate the Wyze Home in the list and log in with your Wyze account.

Google Assistant will automatically sync and create a list of your Wyze devices from your Wyze account.

How to connect Wyze Lock to Alexa

To pair your Wyze Lock to Alexa, you need to enable the Wyze skill in your Amazon device. Connect your Wyze Lock to Alexa using the following steps:

  • Open the Wyze app.
  • Go to account settings.
  • Tap “ Works with” to link Alexa to your Wyze account.
  • Download the Alexa app and create an account.
  • In the Alexa app, search Wyze skills and enable it.
  • A prompt will appear to enter your Wyze username and password to allow Alexa to access your Wyze lock.
  • Click “Add Devices” so that Alexa can find your lock. Your Wyze lock will be added to a list under Devices in the Smart Home section.

How to remove your Wyze account with Alexa

  • Open the Wyze app.
  • Go to Account settings.
  • Click on “Works With” to unlink your account.

Alternatively;

  • Open the Alexa app.
  • Open the menu and select Smart Home.
  • Click your Wyze lock and select delete or disable.

Wyze Lock won’t unlock manually.

After installing the Wyze lock, you should still be able to lock and unlock your door manually. The thumb latch has only two positions, vertical and horizontal. The position will change depending on which side of the door you install the Wyze lock. The most common reason for the lock not turning is installing the Wyze lock with the thumb latch in the wrong position. Remove the lock, turn the thumb latch 90 degrees and then reinstall it.

Wyze Lock not auto-locking

The auto-lock feature allows the door to lock itself automatically after a set time frame. This setting is also set on the Wyze lock and does not depend on the network. It means that your door will always lock even if the network goes offline. Here is how to troubleshoot the Wyze lock when the auto-lock feature is not working correctly.

  • Check the lock settings on the app. Make sure the auto-lock settings are enabled and set the delay time. The delay time frame ranges from immediate up to 10 minutes. To change the auto-lock setting, you need to be near the lock and have your Bluetooth enabled. If the auto-lock settings on the app are gray, try rebooting your Bluetooth by switching it off and then on again.
  • Check the deadbolt’s alignment. If the deadbolt does not align with the recess on the door frame, it will cause the auto-lock to fail as a jammed lock. It happens when you partially close the door, and the auto-lock engages immediately, causing a jammed lock.
  • Check the lock’s calibration. Wyze lock has an in-built sensor that monitors the angle and position of the door to know if your door is open or closed. Ensure you calibrate the door properly after installing the lock; that way, the lock can notify you when the door opens or closes depending on its angle and position from the door frame.
  • Check the batteries. The auto-lock feature will start to fail when the batteries start to run low. The batteries tend to last between four to six months, depending on the frequency of use. Replace all four batteries at the same time with standard alkaline batteries.

Wyze lock is not auto unlocking.

Auto-unlock is a feature that uses geofencing to automatically unlock your door through other features such as location services and Bluetooth on your phone. The Location services feature recognizes that you are near your home after being away, which communicates with the Wyze lock to scan for your phone via Bluetooth.

When your phone is within Bluetooth range from the lock, the door will automatically unlock without the need for a code or key. Keep in mind that the Wyze Band has a Bluetooth range of about 10 feet. The maximum range is about 30 feet, but the connection may not be strong enough to unlock your door. Here is how to troubleshoot it when it starts developing problems.

  • Check the auto-unlock settings on your phone. Stand close to the lock, switch on your phone’s Bluetooth, open the app, go to settings, and clock on auto-unlock to enable it. The toggle will turn blue.
  • Close the Wyze Lock app. The auto-unlock feature will not work if the Wyze Lock app tab on your phone is open. Remember to always close the Wyze app tab after using it or have a different page on display to allow the door to auto-unlock.
  • Do not take too long to reach your door. Wyze lock uses Bluetooth to connect to your phone when you are within range. However, auto-unlock will time out after 10 minutes and relock if you do not open the door while in the Bluetooth range.
  • Check the location services on your phone. One of the requirements for the auto-unlock features is location services used by the lock to recognize your phone is close to range. Go to your phone’s settings and enable location services. Also, grant the Wyze app access to your phone’s location services.
  • Reboot your phone’s Bluetooth. Switch your phone’s Bluetooth off and then on again. Rebooting will help strengthen the connection between your phone and the lock when you get within range.

Wyze Lock gateway not connecting to Wi-Fi

The Wyze Lock Gateway uses a 2.4GHz network running a minimum of WPA or WPA2 security. It does not support 5GHz networks. When the Lock Gateway does not connect to Wi-Fi, you will not be able to receive notifications from your lock to your phone. You will also not be able to convey instructions to your Wyze Lock through the app. If the Gateway is refusing to connect to your home’s Wi-Fi and showing offline on the app, here is how to fix the issue.

  • Check the Wi-Fi router and ensure that it is receiving power. If the power outlet has issues, replace the socket.
  • Make sure you are putting in the correct password for your home Wi-Fi if you changed your password recently.
  • Reset your router. Sometimes when the router’s strength may weaken when too many devices are connected. Press and hold the reset button on your Wi-Fi router and try reconnecting.
  • Make sure the router is closer to the Gateway, where the signal strength will be stronger.
  • Reboot your Gateway. Disconnect your Gateway from power for about five minutes, then plug it back in.
  • Check that the Gateway is receiving constant power from its outlet. If not, replace the power socket or move it to another power outlet. Make sure the new Gateway location is still close to the Wyze lock for communication via Bluetooth.
  • Set up the Gateway again. Open the app, remove the device from the app and then add it again to the app.

The Wyze lock and Gateway have a LED light indicators which help indicate a specific status. Here are what all the light indicators on your Wyze lock mean.

Lock

  • Flashing green: The Lock is ready to connect.
  • Flashing red and green: The Lock is updating its firmware.
  • Solid red: The Lock is failing to lock or unlock.
  • Flashing red: The Lock has locked or unlocked successfully, or your lock has a low battery.

Lock Gateway

  • Solid green: The Gateway is connected and working correctly.
  • Flashing red: The Gateway is offline.
  • Flashing green: The Gateway is ready to connect
  • Flashing blue: The Gateway is ready to pair to the lock.

Wyze Lock connection problems troubleshooting guide

If you cannot access the lock through the app or the Wyze app notifies you that the lock is offline, here is how to troubleshoot the lock connection problem.

  • Check the Gateway’s connectivity. Ensure that it is online and communicating properly before troubleshooting the lock itself.
  • Place the Gateway closer to the lock. The Gateway uses Bluetooth to communicate with the lock; therefore, they both have to be within the Bluetooth range of 10 feet.
  • Power-cycle or reboot the lock. Sometimes when the lock stays idle for a while, the connection weakens. To reboot the lock, remove the battery cover, remove one of the four batteries and then return it. Rebooting will strengthen the connection between the Gateway and the lock again.
  • Low batteries. When the batteries are losing their power, the connection between the lock and the Gateway weakens. Replace all four batteries at the same time. Do not use rechargeable or extended Life batteries with the Wyze Lock.
  • If all fails, you can remove it from the app and then set it up again. It will reset all connections.
